What should students do if they are accused of plagiarism?

If you are accused of plagiarism, the first step is to stay calm and read the accusation carefully. Understand exactly which section of your work is in question and what specific violation is alleged. Do not respond immediately—take time to review your own work and gather any evidence of your original drafting process, such as notes, outlines, earlier drafts, or browser history.

Most institutions have a formal process: you will typically be invited to respond before any penalty is applied. Respond honestly and professionally, acknowledging any errors without speculating about intent. If the allegation is incorrect, explain clearly why with supporting evidence. Seek support from a student advisor or academic integrity officer if available. Our post on how universities check for plagiarism explains how these processes typically work. In future, use Quetext’s Plagiarism Checker before submitting to catch any issues in advance.
