How do you use Chicago style citations?

Chicago style offers two citation systems: notes-bibliography and author-date. The Notes-Bibliography system requires each citation in a numbered footnote or endnote, along with a corresponding bibliographic entry at the end of your document. The Author-Date system uses parentheses to indicate the author and year of publication within the text and is accompanied by a Reference List, similar to APA style.

For the first citation of a source in the Notes-Bibliography system, you will need to include the entire citation in the footnote. All subsequent citations require only a shortened version of the citation. Our guide on how to cite a letter in APA, MLA, and Chicago style includes formatting examples. Quetext's Citation Generator handles both Chicago systems automatically.
