What is a citation?

A citation is a formal reference to the original source of information used in a research paper. An official notice of appearance in a court of law or military achievement. Citations credit the original author, deter academic dishonesty by way of plagiarism, and enable a reader to find the cited work to verify the accuracy of its contents.

It serves two main purposes:

  • Giving credit to the original author
  • Allowing readers to verify and explore sources further

Citations are essential for maintaining academic integrity and preventing plagiarism. They create a transparent trail that supports the credibility of your content.
